Concert on the 100th anniversary of the death of Francisco Tárrega
2009, an anniversary year for many famous composers. In the shadow of the concerts and festivals in honour of Handel († 1759) and Haydn († 1809),
a memorial concert for Francisco Tárrega took place in Laatzen near Hanover on 21 November 2009. The concert, organised by guitar teachers
Eberhard Panitz and Leandro Riva, was probably the only one far and wide, although Tárrega is also considered the
„father of today's guitar music”.
Tárregas importance in today's guitar world is great, especially since he not only wrote numerous original compositions, but also transcribed many
works by great composers such as Mozart, Bach or Chopin for guitar. His compositions were played by students and teachers of the Laatzen Music School,
but not only on guitar, but also on other instruments. Among the pieces performed, all originally composed for one guitar, were many first performances
for guitar duo or violin and guitar in new versions and arrangements by Eberhard Panitz. For example, the „Danza Mora”, a Moorish dance,
which was not published until 1914. The version for two guitars seemed more harmonious than the original, as the two guitars took over the melody and
accompaniment parts alternately and played the motifs to each other.
In contrast, Prelude No.1 was performed by two students of the Laatzen Music School, Firuza and Leyla Ibadova, on violin and guitar. The additional
accompanying part made the work seem more intense and romantic than the solo piece.
One of Tárregas's most famous pieces, the „Capricho Arabe”, was presented by Ivana Topalovic, who teaches piano at the music school.
The transcription from guitar to piano was done by Manuel Burgés, a contemporary of Tárrega. The piano version, which was rather eagerly
awaited, shone in the major part, which sounded far more sonorous than the original guitar version.
The glissandi in Prelude No.2 and „La Mariposa”, the butterfly, performed by Leandro Riva and Eberhard Panitz, also delighted the audience.
The last piece in the programme, „Recuerdos de la Alhambra” (Memories of the Alhambra) was performed in the version for two guitars, the second
part being by Julio Sagreras (1879-1942). The piece was more worth listening to than the original due to the counter-voice in the second part and challenged
the audience to real storms of enthusiasm. As an encore, a waltz was performed, perhaps the only original work for two guitars by Tárrega.
Between the first and second part of the concert a slide show about the life of Tárrega was inserted, with many partly unknown photos. The concert
was a special experience for the visitors, as little-known pieces by Tárrega were also performed and a lot could be learned about the probably most
important composer of guitar music of the last century.
